![]() PAUL – A Minnesota Department of Natural Resources outdoor skills webinar series has seen continued growth in attendance as Minnesotans seek to build their skills in fishing, hunting, habitat and outdoors, the DNR said. The Game and Fish list of potentially winterkilled lakes is available at gf.nd.gov/fishing/winterkill-watch-list. Minor fish kills that should not affect fishing quality, as well as many community ponds that have been replenished with catchable fish, are not listed. The list on the Game and Fish website includes lakes that have experienced some level of winter mortality. ![]() As plants die and decay, they can deplete dissolved oxygen levels to the point where fish cannot survive. Winter occurs when deep snow and thick ice prevent sunlight from reaching aquatic plants that produce oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. Many of the lakes will not be fully assessed until standard net surveys are completed this summer. Unfortunately, the long list of lakes, coupled with a late spring, did not allow for special assessments of winter mortality in all lakes on the list, the ministry said. Game and finfish fisheries staff have already sampled some lakes to confirm overwinter mortality events. Kidder County was one of the hardest-hit areas in the state, with winter mortality confirmed in 11 lakes and low dissolved oxygen levels documented in another. The severity can range from a partial kill, where a significant number of fish died, to a full kill, where all the fish died, the department said. While some of the lakes highlighted on the list may not have suffered mass fish kills, many have suffered at least some level of winter kill, the department said. BISMARCK – The North Dakota Game and Fish Department has compiled a watch list on its website of more than 90 lakes across the state that have experienced winter fish kills or low dissolved oxygen levels during the winter 2022-23.
